As Arizona residents seek refuge indoors from the recent rain, hail and windstorms, so do critters and insects. Unwelcome pests can appear inside the home, garages and patios prompting consumers to look for a pest control company. Better Business Bureau (BBB) recommends following a few simple steps to ensure that a trustworthy and reliable pest control company helps keep critters outside.

“While consumers may find urgency in ridding their homes of pest infestations, they should do their research to ensure they are enlisting the skills and expertise of a qualified and trustworthy pest control specialist,” said Matthew Fehling, BBB President/CEO.

When hiring a pest control company, BBB suggests that home and business owners consider the following:

  • Start with BBB. Local companies that uphold BBB’s standards for ethical business practices can be found in BBB’s Accredited Business Directory at www.arizonabbb.org. You can also request free quotes from BBB Accredited Businesses using our online eQuote feature. BBB also provides Business Reviews on pest control companies giving you the opportunity to review the company free of charge by calling BBB or visiting the our website.

  • Obtain written quotes from several companies. Ask for a written inspection report and an itemized list of treatments needed and their costs. Compare fees, treatment plans and guarantees from at least three companies. Also, ask about subsequent treatments and their costs, to take into consideration when selecting a company.

  • Read the fine print. Since services are often performed under a contract, read it carefully. Pests often return and may require repeated treatments. Be alert to details about treatment plans, guarantees, time restrictions and coverage on any guarantees.

  • Verify credentials. Verify that the pest control technician and the company have the required licensure, training and certifications. Contact the Arizona Office of Pest Management by visiting www.sb.state.az.us or calling 800-223-0618.

  • Ask about insurance. Verify that the company has the appropriate insurance coverage in case there is damage to your home or a worker is injured on your property.

  • Get educated. There are three common methods of pest control: capture, eradication and barrier systems. Understand the extent of the pest infestation as well as possible control methods and side effects of chemicals used. Look for a company that can diagnose and recommend treatment that minimizes risk to other animals and people.
